Do I need a Till number to receive tips on M-Pesa?

Why M-Pesa prompts pay into a Till, Paybill or bank account, which one suits a creator, and what to do if you only have a personal number.

The short answer

Support Hustle sends supporters an M-Pesa prompt. M-Pesa prompts pay businesses, so the money has to go to a Till (Buy Goods), a Paybill, or a bank account through the bank’s Paybill. A personal number can’t receive them.

The account must be yours: ZetuPay never holds the money, so it lands wherever you point your page.

Till, Paybill or bank: which one?

  • Till: the simplest. Supporters’ money lands in your Till straight away.
  • Paybill: works if you already have one. You can add an account number so tips are labelled.
  • Bank account: the tip goes through your bank’s Paybill into your account. Choose your bank from the list when you add it.

If you only have a personal number

Ask Safaricom or your bank about getting a Till or Paybill; what they ask for differs, so check with them directly.

If you already have a bank account, receiving into it through the bank’s Paybill can be the quickest way to start, as long as your bank is on Support Hustle’s list.
